Highschool and Summer Internships

Our lab loves inspiring and teaching the next generation of scientists! We host about four students every summer that want to learn about how to do research. Our Summer Interns learn:

  • How to ask good research questions
  • New research techniques and the conditions we use them
  • How to collect data reliably and accurately
  • Imaging techniques using confocal microscopy

This short-term commitment opportunity is an excellent way to obtain experience in a research setting! Interns work closely with a member of the lab on their established project. We accept students from highschool to undergraduates as Summer Interns, with requirements varying by age. Reference the material below to submit your application!

Please reach out to our PI well in advance to discuss this opportunity before completing any paperwork. You must have the approval from Dr. Shen before any material is reviewed.

Students over the age of 18

Internships are hosted through the Department of Biology. For Non-Minors, an application packet must be submitted 30 days before their requested start date. After your completed packet is reviewed and accepted, you will be provided information to complete mandatory online safety trainings. After the online trainings, you will come to campus, where you will meet with our PI, be provided an in-person safety training by the lab manager, and introduced to your mentor. Additional meetings from the Department may be assigned.

Application packets and other materials can be retrieved from Dr. Shen, the lab manager, or HR for the Department of Biology.
